Autumn/winter is our absolute favourite season of the year (just so you know, we think in fashion seasons rather than those of the meteorological variety – much easier to distinguish).

British people dress better in winter than they do in summer. Fact.
We much prefer wrapping ourselves in snuggly coats and layers of soft knit. In fact, we dream in cashmere.
And with shops receiving their first delivery of new season AW14 clothes next month (true story), here’s all you need to know about the key trends.


1. 60s mods

Every season has its signature decade these days and this time round it’s the 60s, as seen at Nicolas Ghesquiere’s first show for Louis Vuitton which featured structured A-line shifts, knee-high shiny leather boots and luxe polo necks.
Gucci’s more glamorous take saw brown leather A-lines paired with ruffled leather shirts, while Valentino gave us bright printed tunics.

Note, pointed 60s flats and mini boxy handbags are also having a moment. It’s 60s with a modern twist.

2. Fairy tales come true

Giant fur hoods and deep rich reds hit the Dolce & Gabbana AW14 catwalk (Picture: Vittorio Zunino Celotto/Getty Images)Dolce & Gabbana turned storytellers with their dark, unctuous take on traditional fairy tales for AW14. Think huge fur hoods, jade green embellished capes and enchanting Little Red Riding Hood thick ruby coats.

Elsewhere, there was no less drama at Christopher Kane with his delicious 3D millefeuille dresses and tuilled spiral arms. Oh, and don’t forget Preen’s Darth Vader sweats.
Expect shops to be littered with hooded capes and bold embellished detail, particularly when the colder weather hits.

3. Designer normcore

Don’t groan. Yes, normcore’s gone high fashion. Also described as ‘perfectly boring’, the key to this trend is beautifully tailored louche trouser suits, soft wool jumpers, and a lot of classic grey, navy and black. This is about wearing the very best classic pieces you can afford, to make your life as simple and comfortable as possible. As seen at Stella McCartney, Marc Jacobs and Margaret Howell.

Just remember, this is designer normcore, so leave the hoody at home.

4. Portrait of an artist

Burberry often creates trends all on its own these days. And it’s no different this season with Christopher Bailey celebrating the boho artists and writers of the 1920s, known as the Bloomsbury set. Beautiful, whimsical watercolour scarves were layered over dresses and worn with drawstring ankle boots and either a shearling jacket or one of those monogrammed blankets.

One for the creative spirit inside all of us.

  Creating A Hot Fashion Look for 2014:

Like they say " If You Always Do What You Always Did You Will Always Get What You Always Got".                                                                           

      Let's think about what you would like to do this year that is different than last year. I know these new year's resolutions can be not much more than wishful thinking in so many ways but the bottom line when it comes to change it is simply following a plan that works for you. We're talking fashion here but this can apply to any change that you want to accomplish in your life. So here is a point by point road map for you to follow.

1. Set a few achievable goals ( perhaps they include updating your casual wardrobe or your business attire.)
2. Set up an affordable budget that includes fashion pieces that you like (Shop a few stores online to start and get some ideas that work for you.)
3. Consult your social networking friends to see what they think about your fashion selections. (use Pinterest, Facebook, and New one I like is Chiq that is exclusive to fashion.)
4. Take a fresh look in your closet for items that you like and want to keep, as well you may have a few pieces that are good that you could take to a local consignment shop for resale. 
5. Think about saving money where you can and plan out your new fashion looks where you have mix and match pieces that go well with one another.

Going Into Your Closet Lets Take A Look

Does Anything In Your Closet Need Your Attention:

Some of your clothes may need cleaned, ironed, or mended. If so now is the time to take it off the hanger and deal with it. Put it either in the laundry/ dry clean, mend or to be ironed pile. Let's add another pile and lets call it the give it to a charity pile. It's also time to pay attention to all those shoes, underwear, hosiery, and hand bags. Do they all successfully still complement your fashion apparel? How about managing the amount of clothes in your closet. Let's put away summer and concentrate on just having and winter clothes to choose from. When you do this closet exercise you make it much easier to see and select the fashion apparel that you would like to wear for that day and for the week. So lets look at some individual categories of apparel in your closet and determine what you would like to do with each item of clothing.

Underwear and Lingerie

Underwear and Lingerie:

First throw out the ratty, stretched out, riding-up underwear. Do an account of how many pairs of usable underwear that you have left and keep those for every day use. Now look at your really nice sexy special occasion underwear. Perhaps its time to look at some fresh looks and add a bit of that newness back into tour underwear drawer and your closet. How about your bras, are they getting a bit ratty looking and are they comfortable and do they still fit and look good on you. Check out your sizing when you are in your lingerie department , it's free to check this out at some stores.

T-Shirts

 

Check Out Your T- Shirts:

Throw away all of your t-shirts that are falling apart and are stained. Separate the spring and summer colors from the fall and winter colors and store the out going season elsewhere. Now what's left, and do they still fit in the shoulders, bust and waist? What size are you and which necklines flatters you? Sometimes your t-shirts can be worn with other shirts or jackets that really look good on you, so consider that before you consider throwing it out. Look at the room you have in your closet, looking good.  

Shop for Jeans

        

Let's Look at Your Jeans:

Start with getting rid of all the jeans that no longer fit. Take an honest look at your jeans, do they look good on you? Do they show off too much when you bend over? If so could this be fixed with a belt or an under-shirt? Also consider investing in some flattering dark-wash jeans if you do not already have a pair.

Shop for Dresses

What about Your Dresses:

  In your closet do you have a dress for every occasion? Perhaps you should consider whether you have a selection of casual, business,or that Little Black Dress. Are they in style or have they become dated in their look. Separate out the season's as you did before with your other clothes. Try them on, do they still look good and do they fit well, perhaps it's time to add some new color and style to your wardrobe.
